The UK National Lottery has once again played an important role in the preservation of British heritage through its National Lottery Heritage fund.
The UK National Lottery has brought a historic Victorian pier “back from the brink of loss.” Birnbeck Pier in Weston-super-Make opened in 1867 and has served as a gateway to Birnbeck Island for the past century and a half.
The project intends to safeguard important patrimony.
Birnbeck Pier, commonly known as the Old Pier, is one of just six Grade II piers still standing in Great Britain and is listed on Historic England’s Heritage at Risk Register. The dilapidated pier, formerly popular among travelers, has been rotting for years and is in desperate need of repair.
Fortunately, the National Lottery Heritage Fund has already committed £10 million towards the restoration of the Old Pier. This will allow the North Somerset Council, which presently owns the pier, to perform out necessary repairs while also preserving the pier’s 160-year history.
The council, which purchased the pier from a private owner who had left it in ruin, intends to finish the restoration project by 2027 and welcome tourists back.

Restore Weston-super-Mare’s Cultural Landscape
The money for the National Lottery Heritage Fund was raised from ticket sales, which aligns with the National Lottery’s mission of providing financing to good causes. This money will be used to help the North Somerset Council rehabilitate both the pier and the island itself. In addition, the project will bring a new RNLI lifeboat station on the island.
Eilish McGuinness, CEO of the National Lottery Heritage Fund, remarked on the topic, stating that the project is “great news for Weston-super-Mare and beyond” because it will rejuvenate the area’s cultural and economic landscape. Furthermore, it will generate new jobs and provide a source of pride for the community.
North Somerset Council Leader Mike Bell stated that the large money will enable his team to rehabilitate the pier. He praised The National Lottery Heritage Fund for their support, as well as National Lottery players for making this project possible in the first place.
