South Korea’s Daegu District Court has convicted 12 former employees of Daegu Casino, a foreigner-only venue in the city, in connection with a KRW4.4 billion (US$3.0 million) scam involving table game play, as well as misappropriation of venue revenue.
Charges were first brought in June 2022
One news agency said that two Chinese nationals were among the foreign players affected by the fraud. A second news site said that a Japanese player was also afflicted.
Those condemned included the casino’s former CEO, two other executives, and nine former managers. According to local media sources, no names were provided.
Daegu Casino is located in the Hotel Inter-Burgo in Daegu, in the southeast of the nation.
According to local media, the case revolved around events in 2017 that involved incorrect card shuffling and “card swapping” by casino employees under the supervision of other employees.

The investigation also found 732 instances in which casino dealers were provided complimentary services at the venue for a total of KRW233.8 million as inducements to engage in the fraud.
According to court records, such illegal use of gratis services constituted embezzlement.
Some of the defendants received prison terms ranging from three years to one year. Probation durations ranged from five to one year. Community service penalties ranged from 160 to 200 hours.
The court heard that the schemes were quite “professional”. According to published reports, the public prosecutor’s office did not talk with the overseas players who are believed to have been affected by the swindle.
