The mayor of the city is under criticism for the delays in his previously announced plans to outlaw gambling advertisements on the Tube.

Sir Sadiq Khan, the mayor of London, is allegedly coming under fire for not keeping his pledge to outlaw gambling advertisements on the city’s Tube. About four years have passed since his 2021 reelection platform called for a ban on gambling and betting advertisements on London’s subway system.

The mayor is accused of “reversing” TfF’s ban on gambling advertisements.

Khan recognized the detrimental effects of gambling and betting at the moment the manifesto was made public. The mayor of London emphasized that compulsive gambling ruins entire families’ lives in addition to the lives of individuals. Khan has allegedly been accused of “backtracking” on his pledge to outlaw gambling advertisements, but four years later, he has yet to take significant action.

According to The Standard, London Assembly member Caroline Russell recently sent Khan a series of written questions, including when the gambling advertisements would be taken down from the city’s transit system. She asked when Transport for London (TfL) will adopt a “ethical advertising policy,” or if the mayor is actually waiting for public protest and media attention before removing the gambling advertisements.

Russell said she didn’t understand Khan’s request for additional proof before declaring a ban on such ads, even though she had heard testimonies from those impacted by gambling harm. Before making any modifications to TfL’s policy, the mayor of London clarified that he required “more detail about the Government’s plans in this area.”

Russell emphasized the significance of tackling the harm caused by gambling and giving Londoners the much-needed support they require. But instead, she continued, “as they travel on the transport network, they are confronted with advertisements that normalize and glamourize gambling.” Russell went on to say: “It appears that the mayor is reversing his 2021 pledge to propose a ban on gambling advertisements on the TfL network.”

Reducing Gambling Injury Continues to Be a Top Priority

In the run-up to last year’s general election, the Labour Party included a pledge to combat gambling-related harm. The party did not, however, elaborate, instead restating its commitment to reducing the harm associated with gaming.

Following the announcement of a mandatory charge late last year, changes were made to the gambling sector. The levy’s ultimate goal was to increase funding for gambling harm research and treatment. In light of this, further adjustments are not surprising given the increasing acceptance of betting and the accessibility of internet gaming.

Although the industry continues to be essential to the nation, providing economic stimulation and tens of thousands of jobs, anti-gambling activists have long favored more regulations as a means of combating gambling addiction and harm. However, many worry that if harsh regulations are put in place, people may leave the legal industry, as is already the case in other European sectors.
