Rosemary Casarotti bought a ticket at Sunshine Food and Gas Circle K in Cottonwood, Shasta County, and won the huge prize by properly matching all six numbers in the December 27, 2024, drawing.

The winner of the $1.2 billion Mega Millions prize from the previous year has finally been made public. Rosemary Casarotti has been identified by California lottery officials as the winner of the winning ticket, but she wishes to remain anonymous.

The winner of the Mega Millions jackpot chooses a $571 million lump sum instead of public recognition

When Casarotti matched all six numbers in the drawing on December 27, 2024, he won the enormous reward. In Cottonwood, Shasta County, she purchased the ticket at Sunshine Food and Gas Circle K. According to lottery authorities, she chose to keep her huge prize to herself rather than attend a press conference to celebrate.

California Lottery representative Carolyn Becker discussed a conversation she had with Casarotti despite not attending the public event. According to Becker, Casarotti was thrilled and grateful to have won, and she appreciated that her lottery participation helped support the state’s public schools, according to The Sun.

Like many lottery winners, Casarotti had to choose between receiving a smaller sum all at once or the entire jackpot in yearly payments. She chose the second option, which immediately paid her $571 million in cash. Casarotti pocketed the majority of her windfall because lottery prizes are not taxed in California. She was unable to remain secret, though, because state regulations require the names of prize winners to be made public.

California’s public schools benefited from Casarotti’s significant victory as well. Approximately $89.5 million from ticket sales throughout the jackpot buildup will be donated to state-wide education initiatives, according to the lottery.

Additionally, a reward was given to the Circle K location that sold the winning ticket. The normal bonus for retailers selling tickets for jackpots is $1 million, which was given to the family-owned firm.

Ishar Gill, the owner of the store, expressed his excitement about the historic victory, saying it made both his company and the neighborhood proud.

Casarotti’s win is one of the largest Mega Millions jackpots ever awarded, however it falls short of the August 2023 record of $1.6 billion. Her win demonstrates extraordinary luck, as the odds of winning the Mega Millions jackpot are 1 in 302.6 million.

Despite Rosemary Casarotti’s decision to stay out of the spotlight, her life has permanently changed. Meanwhile, with a current jackpot of over $324 million, Mega Millions continues to attract optimistic players.
