A Thai woman believed to be the country’s deadliest serial killer has been sentenced to death in the first of 14 murder cases.

Sararat “Am Cyanide” Rangsiwuthaporn, 36, is accused of using poison to kill 14 friends and acquaintances. Sararat, dubbed “Am Cyanide” by Thai media for her preferred technique of murdering her victims, is a gambling addict who killed for financial gain, according to authorities.

Investigators revealed Sararat had spent 78 million Bhat (US$2.3 million) over three years at Fun88, an illegal online gambling site, risking up to 10 million Bhat (US$290,000) per day.

Sararat “Am Cyanide” Rangsiwuthaporn supported her gambling addiction by borrowing money from her victims before murdering and taking their belongings, according to prosecutors. One of those she reportedly targeted survived.

Cyanide is a fast-acting toxin that can kill within 30 minutes of consumption. It depletes the body’s cells of oxygen, which can cause heart attacks. Because it leaves the body fast, it is difficult to detect.

Denies the charges

A Bangkok court convicted Sararat on Wednesday of poisoning her companion, Siriporn Kanwong. The defendant rejected all of the charges against her.

Sararat first came under suspicion in April 2023, when she traveled with Siriporn from Bangkok to Ratchaburi, Thailand, to release fish at a pier as part of a Buddhist rite.

When Siriporn slumped and died on the riverbed, Sararat left rather than joining onlookers who attempted to assist.

Investigators learned that Siripon’s cash and possessions had gone missing. An autopsy revealed signs of cyanide in her corpse, and a check of Sararat’s residence turned up a bottle of the poison.

Sararat, who is little under 5 feet tall, was significantly pregnant when she was jailed and eventually miscarried.

Following her incarceration, several witnesses came forward to report that relatives died in mysterious circumstances shortly after meeting her. Her alleged victims include an ex-boyfriend and three female police officers.

‘Bad Karma’

Sararat’s husband, Vitoon Rangsiwuthaporn, a former high-ranking police officer, was sentenced to 16 months in prison for concealing evidence to help her avoid punishment. Her attorney received a two-year prison sentence for the same offense.

Outside the courtroom on Wednesday, Siriporn’s mother, Thongpin, hailed the sentence and claimed Sararat smiled as it was read.

“She got bad karma back, and I wish all the bad karma will keep following her,” she told a news conference.
