Spread of gambling in the Argentine province of Córdoba is opposed by the church

In an open letter to the province’s governor, Córdoba evangelical pastors expressed their opposition to gaming and casinos. They cautioned in the letter about the increase in betting that the government is pushing as “public policy.”

In addition to having a significant presence in the province’s most underprivileged districts, the evangelical sector has recently grown in power in the ruling party’s political calculations.

The construction of a casino near Cruz del Eje, “one of the communities hardest hit by poverty and unemployment,” was of special concern to them.

The official statement called for the creation of “jobs, quality education, and safety—not these shiny trinkets that impoverish and bring misery” and demanded a “rollback on the implementation of the (new) tenders.”

The most modest individuals will be impacted by this choice, according to Córdoba’s evangelical clergy

We cannot keep quiet about the detrimental effects this will have on our people after learning of the abrupt decision by the Córdoba government to quickly solicit bids for the private concession of the majority of the city’s casinos, the construction of a new one in Cruz del Eje, and the approval of the installation of 5,000 new slot machines.

We acknowledge that the size of the industry has overcome many wills, and the provincial government will now give the gambling concession to “entrepreneurs” who will run casinos and slot machines across the province under the pretense of apparent but nonexistent growth.

In December, Governor Martín Llaryora made the decision to hold a slot machine tender three years before the concession owned by the Roggio Group’s Concesionaria de Entretenimientos y Turismo (CET) expired.

Furthermore, the casinos that oversee table games—currently operated by Lotería de Córdoba—will henceforth be privately owned.

The provincial government will maintain management of the Villa Carlos Paz casino, which takes home 75% of the approximately $7 billion wagered on poker and roulette tables last year, while private organizations will assume full responsibility for the casinos.

According to the Lotería de Córdoba, four businesses will vie for the province’s casino, hotel, and slot machine concessions.

The current concessionaire, CET SA, Casino de Victoria, and Fuente Mayor, a Mendoza-capitalized company, were the companies that put in bids in the area that included the municipalities of Alta Gracia, Cruz del Eje, and Río Ceballos.

The same businesses, along with Boldt S.A., filed proposals for the areas designated in the tender as the “Federal and Tourist Rings.”

Growing criticism to the governor’s decision coincides with the letter. The expansion of gambling in the province and the privatization of casinos would be up for public vote, according to a proposal put forth by a group of opposition lawmakers in January.
