Sahara Las Vegas will close its seven-table poker room on November 16 and transition to a new slot machine idea that will debut in mid-December, the north Strip resort-casino stated.
The adjustment comes as poker rooms continue to close on the Las Vegas Strip, a trend exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly in smaller and mid-sized casinos where poker has become a financial burden. Sahara hosts four poker tournaments per day.
The redesigned casino section will include a slot-focused area with unique access to test games from prominent gaming companies, allowing players to explore some of the most recent developments in slot technology.

“When it debuts in mid-December, the enhanced offerings will include dedicated slot banks where players can be some of the first in Las Vegas to play the newest test games from top gaming content providers,” Sahara Las Vegas General Manager Paul Hobson said in a statement.
Sahara’s move follows a similar one by Caesars Palace, which closed its poker room in August to create place for slot machines while the high-limit slot area was refurbished. The Caesars Poker Room may return, but no date has been announced.
With poker rooms increasingly viewed as “loss leaders” in some hotels, numerous Las Vegas casinos have repurposed space for more profitable slot machines. Sahara’s new slot concept will be announced in further detail as the December debut date approaches.
