Novomatic, a prominent worldwide gaming technology business, has announced the signing of an agreement to purchase Vikings Casinos SAS, a French casino operator.

Vikings Casinos SAS, based in Falaise, is a major participant in the French gambling business. The company offers 11 live gambling casinos around France, including facilities in high-profile locales like the Côte d’Azur.

The purchase is consistent with Novomatic’s objective of increasing its footprint in important foreign markets, notably in Europe.

In a news statement, Novomatic executive board member Stefan Krenn stated that the acquisition of Vikings Casinos aligns with the company’s international expansion plan and strengthens its position as a leader in the European gaming sector.

With this move, we have effectively created the groundwork for long-term expansion in France.”

Since its inception in 1998, Vikings Casinos has established a significant presence in the French gaming sector.
The firm was created through a collaboration between VIKINGS SAS, directed by Serge Foucher, and Jeux C. Casino Consultant, managed by Luc Le Borgne, both of whom had substantial casino industry experience.

Today, Romain Foucher chairs Vikings Casinos and continues to manage its operations and expansion.

The company had difficulties in 2023, when it apparently suffered a cyberattack ahead of similar attacks affecting big casino operators MGM Resorts and Caesars Entertainment. However, no connection between the two was ever discovered.

Despite these problems, the firm has remained a prominent participant in the French gaming sector, gaining interest from overseas investors such as Novomatic.

Capturing an important market

The purchase represents an important milestone in Novomatic’s growth plan. France is one of Europe’s major gaming markets, and this acquisition will allow the firm to expand its market position and broaden its portfolio in the country.

Recent political turbulence in France might also benefit the corporation. Protests and strikes over contentious changes, particularly those involving pensions, have caused economic instability and affected many industries.

This uncertainty has had an impact on consumer spending and leisure activities, with Paris gambling halls being particularly badly hit. Furthermore, regulatory scrutiny has intensified as political leaders advocate for tougher regulation of businesses deemed non-essential.

Furthermore, for the same reason, discussions about internet gambling have been put on hold. This has the potential to revitalize the land-based gaming industry as well.

Nonetheless, given Vikings Casinos’ established operations and reputation, the acquisition is likely to strengthen Novomatic’s presence in the land-based gaming market under Novomatic Vikings Casino umbrella.

The transaction is currently awaiting regulatory clearance, with authorities charged with ensuring antitrust and market fairness compliance.

Both Novomatic and Vikings Casinos now have non-dominant positions in the French gambling sector, lowering the probability of antitrust complaints. However, the transaction’s completion will be contingent on a comprehensive assessment by appropriate authorities.

This statement comes shortly after Novomatic agreed to sell a 100% share in Atlas Group GmbH, the parent firm of Austria’s Admiral Group, to Tipico Group. That transaction is also subject to regulatory approval.
