Since August 2021, Boyle has served as the Gambling Commission’s chair.
Marcus Boyle will leave his position as head of the British Gambling Commission on January 31, 2025, the commission stated. His resignation will bring an end to more than three years in the role, during which time significant reforms were implemented as part of a continuous updating of UK gambling laws and regulations.
In August 2021, Boyle took over as manager from Bill Moyes following the start of an inquiry into Football Index’s demise. During his tenure, the regulator created plans for new data uses and piloted financial risk assessments for online gaming, and it awarded the UK National Lottery license to a new operator, Allwyn.

Boyle formerly worked for the professional services network Deloitte as a board member, chief strategy officer, and chief operating officer. In addition, he served as a trustee of the Serpentine Gallery and chairman of the British American Drama Academy.
The Department for Culture, Media, and Sport announced plans this week to impose an obligatory fee on gambling operators starting in April 2025 in order to support research, education, and therapy. This was one of the most recent changes in the British gambling industry. In the meanwhile, starting next month, online casino slots will have bet limitations. These have been set at £2 for players 18 to 21 and £5 for those over 21.
“The last three years have been very significant for the Commission, as it takes forward measures set out in the Gambling Act Review and begins the process of the fourth National Lottery license,” said Baroness Twycross, minister for gaming, in reference to Moyle’s retirement.
I wish Marcus the best of luck in his future endeavors and appreciate his dedication to the Gambling Commission and public service throughout his term.
