Over the last four years, reports of illicit online gambling in South Korea have tripled, according to government data.

An opposition MP received data from the National Gambling Control Commission indicating a dramatic increase in reported incidents. The Korea Herald, a local news agency, said on Wednesday that there was a threefold increase in these instances, from 13,064 in 2019 to 39,082 in 2023.

According to the National Gambling Control Commission, 80.3 percent of the 48,648 occurrences of unlawful gambling in South Korea last year were through online platforms. This made online gambling the most common type of gaming.

South Koreans usually travel to Philippines to play at land based casino, especially the VIP players.

At 19.4% of the total in 2023, illegal sports betting made up the second-largest portion.

Korea Casino Association statistics shows that there are 17 casinos in South Korea, 16 of which are exclusively accessible to foreign visitors.

Situated 150 kilometers (93 miles) from Seoul in a highland section of Kangwon province, the Kangwon Land casino resort is the only establishment that permits locals to gamble lawfully.
