In the fall of 2024, the Netherlands Gambling Authority (KSA) shut down a number of illicit poker tournaments.
Cash worth tens of thousands of euros was discovered. Additionally, an unlicensed poker organizer was recently hit with a penalty payment order of up to €110,000 by the Authority.
Illegal poker tournaments frequently contribute to crime undermining, in which criminals exploit lawful companies (like caterers) or individuals for illicit purposes. Poker players also run the danger of developing a gambling addiction, particularly when they play in an unregulated setting with significant stakes.

Illegal gaming, including illegal poker, is opposed by the KSA. In six operations in the last quarter of 2024, KSA inspectors disrupted illicit poker tournaments in Amsterdam, Asten, The Hague, Rotterdam, and Tilburg, frequently working with the police and local governments.
Large sums of money, up to 40,000 euros in one instance, were frequently discovered at the aforementioned places. The municipality ordered the permanent closure of the catering business in question in one of the operations.
In the Netherlands, only one party is permitted to host on-site poker tournaments with cash prizes.
Holland Casino has been there since 1975. Unless a closed circle—a preexisting group of people who know each other, including family, relatives, a nursing home, a firm, or members of an association—is being played, tournaments for prizes or bonuses—money or something that can be exchanged for money—are prohibited.
