Football and tennis generate 61% of notifications.

The International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA), the main advocate for integrity in the legal global sports betting market, has released its 2024 sports betting integrity report.

The study states that the overall number of suspicious betting warnings recorded in 2024 was 219, up 17% from the revised 2023 figure of 187 alerts.

However, the 2024 amount is 11% lower than the yearly average of 245 alerts for 2020-23.

In 2024, suspicious betting notifications covered 12 sports and 53 nations, with Czechia (19) and Turkey (11) at the top of the list. Football and tennis led the way in reported incidents, with 75 and 58 alerts each, accounting for 61% of all alerts in 2024.

There was a regional shift, with suspicious betting on athletic events in Europe decreasing from 113 notifications in 2023 to 80 in 2024. Meanwhile, alarms in Asia went from 17 to 40, while in Africa, they increased from 16 to 28.

IBIA is closely monitoring these changes to assess if they are aberrations or a rising trend that requires response.

IBIA data played an important part in sporting investigations, resulting in 33 matches being declared corrupt and 17 punishments being imposed on clubs, players, and officials for betting offenses.

Khalid Ali, CEO of IBIA, stated: “The integrity position remains relatively consistent with previous years, with suspicious betting primarily focused on football and tennis.” A geographical movement away from European athletic events has been seen, although it is too early to say whether this is a continuing trend. As with any potentially corrupt activities, IBIA is assessing the data and collaborating with its members and the global integrity network to implement targeted countermeasures. IBIA’s increasing membership is steadfast in its commitment to identifying, disrupting, and eliminating fraudulent sports betting activities, as well as collaborating with stakeholders.”

Key Findings of the 2024 Report

  • Football (75) and tennis (58) continue to account for the bulk of suspicious betting warnings, with a total of 133 occurrences (61%), a minor decline from 64% in 2023.
  • In 2024, Europe’s proportion of recorded alarms decreased to 37%, followed by Asia (18%) and Africa (13%).
  • During the year, alerts were raised across 12 sports in 53 nations, with Czechia (19) and Turkey (11) reporting the most suspicious occurrences.
  • In 2024, sports investigations using IBIA data found 33 matches to be compromised, resulting in 17 punishments against clubs, players, and officials.
