The Grand Casino Lucerne is building a new solar system on its lakeside promenade, sending a strong signal for a more sustainable energy source. The PV system was designed in close consultation with the cantonal monument authority and the municipal architect.
On the main roof of the casino building on Haldenstrasse in Lucerne, 104 solar panels were placed covering an area of around 208 square meters. These panels will create around 44,000 kilowatt hours of power each year. This implies that the Grand Casino Lucerne can meet up to 20% of its power demand during peak hours. The yearly CO₂ savings of around 23 tons is equivalent to the environmental effect of almost 600 trees.
“The photovoltaic system is a milestone in our sustainability plan,” adds Wolfgang Bliem, CEO of the Grand Casino Lucerne. “We aim to make our historic building more energy-efficient without losing its architectural attractiveness. This investment underlines our long-term commitment to Lucerne’s greener future.

The Grand Casino Lucerne’s inauguration of the new photovoltaic system sends a strong signal for the integration of sustainable energy concepts into historically significant structures.
“For the sake of the environment, we want to further expand our sustainability measures and extend our Swisstainable label,” explains György Bodnar, Sustainability Officer at Grand Casino Lucerne.
Together with Lucerne Tourism, the Grand Casino Lucerne hopes to improve the region’s view of sustainable initiatives. The new PV system is part of a larger scheme aimed at safeguarding cultural heritage and lowering environmental impact.
