GamCare has provided an update on its activities this year, highlighting a number of problems in addressing responsible gambling in the UK.

GamCare’s National Gambling Helpline received 55,228 calls and online chats from people experiencing gambling-related damage in 2023/24, a 25% rise over the previous year, according to the charity’s annual report.

The spike emphasizes the growing incidence of gambling-related issues, as well as GamCare’s vital role in addressing these concerns.

Recently, GameCare issued a warning of increasing gambling damage during Christmas

Margot Daly, executive chair of GamCare’s board, commented, “Throughout a challenging year and with heightened demand for our services, GamCare’s staff have got on with the job of preventing harm where possible and treating harm where necessary.”

GamCare, which dropped its Safer Gambling Standard in November, said that 74% of all Helpline interactions (41,070 calls or chats) were classified as supportive interventions. These conversations frequently acted as the initial step towards structured treatment, offering quick advice and guidance.

For many people, the Helpline serves as a bridge to specialized treatments, allowing them to embark on personalized recovery journeys. Those who completed treatment reported significant gains, including decreased gambling-related and financial difficulties.

More than simply a helpline

GamCare’s impact extends beyond the Helpline. Over the last year, the organization has provided over 9,100 free therapy sessions, with an average time between referral and service delivery of 2.1 days.

This efficiency emphasizes the need of providing smooth entry points to care for people who require immediate assistance.

In its update, GamCare also cited a March report from the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities that emphasized the Helpline’s impact, indicating that 57% of people seeking gambling harm treatment were referred through GamCare.

Furthermore, the organization broadened its reach by launching specialized initiatives for vulnerable populations such as youth, women, and persons involved in the criminal justice system. Over 53,000 youth, children, and parents received instructional materials.

At the same time, over 10,000 professionals were educated to identify indicators of gambling harm and refer them to suitable resources.

The Women’s Programme, in conjunction with other organisations, trained approximately 4,000 professionals to identify and resolve gambling-related damage in women.

GamCare, founded in 1997, is a major charity dedicated to reducing gambling-related harm throughout the UK. One of its primary missions is to provide free, confidential assistance, guidance, and therapy to people suffering from problem gambling.

In addition, it offers educational and training programs to improve awareness and prevent injury. Despite ongoing developments in the sector as a result of the UK government’s white paper on gambling reform, the organisation remains committed to its objective.
