In the new documentary “Double or Nothing” on Amazon Prime, Andy McElroy, a high-stakes gambler and former illegal bookmaker, tries desperately to win back a lost wager by running a marathon.

Andy McElroy was a legend in the underground sports betting industry, not simply another bookmaker.

Private jet travel and time spent on Johnny Carson’s old yacht were used to gauge his performance. That is, until his $5 billion internet gambling business was shut down by the federal government in 2013.

The Dallas resident attempted to change his ways after being found guilty and receiving a short sentence of three years probation.

Double or nothing is the name of the Documentary

McElroy’s passion for risky gambling remained unwavering. He turned his attention to making huge personal wagers rather than operating illicit sportsbooks.

The documentary “Double or Nothing,” which is currently accessible on Apple TV and Amazon Prime, centers on his most recent gamble.

The narrative begins in 2022 when McElroy makes the game-changing claim, “I’ll bet you $1 million dollars you can’t quit drugs and alcohol,” to his best friend G-Man.

To the surprise of all, G-Man agrees. As required by the wager, he immediately stops using cocaine, Xanax, and alcohol and remains sober for the remainder of the year.

Even though McElroy was once rich enough to lose a seven-figure wager on the 2016 presidential election because he believed Trump would never win, his financial circumstances had since improved.

By 2022, $1 million accounted for a sizeable amount of his residual wealth. McElroy was the loser of the bet because he thought G-Man would never follow through.

When McElroy was forced to pay up, he offered a double-or-nothing option: the wager would be refunded if he finished the Honolulu Marathon in less than ten hours.

Confident that his pal, who was 85 pounds overweight and hadn’t worked out in years, had no chance, G-Man agreed.

“This was a lark that we pulled.”

When John Leake, a true crime journalist who had grown up seeing McElroy’s gambling activities firsthand, took the stage, the plot became more complex.

After learning about the wager, John’s brother Michael—who lives in Hawaii and has contacts in the surf photography industry—told John about it.

The latter recommended that they put together a video team and record the marathon challenge in order to document the drama that was developing.

He told Casino.org, “We did this on a lark.” “But we decided to turn this into a documentary after reviewing the dialogue and the footage and realizing how funny and cinéma vérité it was.”

Leake co-directed the movie with filmmaker Jace Panebianco, who has worked on films like “Broken Molds” (2021) and “Who is J.O.B.” (2012).

As the narrative progresses, viewers discover that McElroy has a lengthy history of breaking the law. Leake remembers that “he paid a really smart guy in our neighborhood to pretend to be him and take the SAT” while he was in high school.

“A Metaphor for Life” is the story.

When speculation began to circulate that McElroy might have bought off the video crew to fabricate his marathon finish, this theme of deceit took front stage.

As Leake and his brother argued about the authenticity of the video, tensions increased.

As Andy seems to cheat, the plot gets more complicated. At stake are $2 million and a 30-year friendship,” the Amazon Prime description reads.

“I see life as a series of gambles to beat the odds that stack ever more against us as we grow older, and this story about gambling and running a marathon is a metaphor for that,” Leake said.

There is more to the documentary than just a high-stakes wager. It delves deeply into the thoughts of obsessive gamblers, the fuzziness of reality and illusion, and the extent some people would go to in order to avoid the repercussions of their own behavior.
