Canada Struggles with Online Gambling Scams

In Saskatchewan, fraudsters have been attempting to exploit the desire for internet gambling by posing as online brands of established casinos.

Authorities in Canada have cautioned customers about the prevalence of online gambling frauds. As it turns out, illegal businesses have been mimicking current operators online, pretending to provide regulated gambling.

These phishing attempts are not unique to Canada

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) spoke with gaming news source CDC Gaming about the scams, which are intricate phishing tactics designed to steal consumer data.

The police stated that such companies are often wanting people’s personal information and credit card data.

The OPP explained that the scammers are imitating existing casinos and pretending to offer internet gambling. The fraudsters have exploited the identities of casinos such as Dakota Dunes Casino and Casino Regina, among others.

This sort of fraud is not exclusive to Ontario. Tribal gaming operators in the US state of Washington have lately reported encountering similar schemes.

Representatives of the operators who examined the problem downloaded the applications and attempted to play, only to be faced with a notification stating that they were unable to place online wagers in Washington.

This led them to believe that this was a sophisticated phishing attack rather than unlawful gaming.

The scam impersonated casinos in Saskatchewan

However, the Canadian casinos impersonated by fraudsters do not even provide online gaming. However, unscrupulous adverts have used their brands to deceive customers and steal their personal information.

These advertisements have started appearing on social media, luring unsuspecting clients into supplying critical information to scammers.

Scammer organizations in Saskatchewan have attempted to capitalize on the desire for internet gaming. Lotteries and Gaming Saskatchewan’s vice president of gaming, Steve Tunison, stated that the fraudsters have used stolen pictures to make their advertisements look convincing.

As a result, the LGS encouraged gamers to stay careful and avoid clicking on any such links. Tunison reminded gamers that, in Saskatchewan, there is just one authorized online gambling platform.

Saskatchewan residents who want to bet online may do so safely and securely on PlayNow.com, the only legal online gaming platform in the province.

Authorities are aware of this issue

Saskatchewan officials confirmed that they are aware of the matter. Alanna Adamko, a spokesman for the Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority (SIGA), said that this fraud is not unique to the province and has targeted a number of casinos and other businesses across North America.

Adamko stated that the SIGA, which owns seven casinos in Saskatchewan, has been collaborating with provincial authorities to combat these frauds.

However, combating such fraud has shown to be a challenging task. The OPP highlighted that these frauds are operated by highly organized criminal gangs, and that attempting to stop them all has been like playing “whack a mole.”
