BetMGM announced on Tuesday that it will bring its Second Chance promotion to NBA and NHL wagering on a limited basis, following its popularity during the NFL season.
The Second Chance promotion for NBA games, which is now running, will continue every Friday until the end of the season. Starting January 8, the NHL version will be available on Wednesdays.
Every Friday during the regular season, supporters who put a straight bet on a player to score the game’s first field goal will earn their wager refunded in cash if that player scores second (Second Chance paid via withdrawable unrestricted money),” according to BetMGM.
“Beginning Jan. 8 and running every Wednesday during the regular season, users who place a straight bet on a player to be the first goal scorer will receive their wager back in cash if that player scores second (Second Chance paid via withdrawable unrestricted funds).”

In layman’s terms, a BetMGM customer who bets on an NBA player to make the first shot in a game will have their money reimbursed if that player makes the second field goal. The bettor receives their money back if the player who was bet on to score the first goal scores the second goal.
BetMGM’s Second Chance Worked for NFL Betting
Player proposition wagers, sometimes known as “prop bets,” are becoming more common in the sports betting world and are popular among certain bettors because they are perceived to be simpler to win than sides or totals. This is not always the case, implying that prop bets might be profitable for operators.

BetMGM acknowledged that the Second Chance marketing plan was successful. The operator stated that the promotion helped to increase first touchdown wagers by 110% during the 2024 NFL campaign.
Second Chance Could Increase NHL Betting
The NHL has traditionally followed the NFL, NBA, and Major League Baseball (MLB) in popularity among US sports bettors, but the BetMGM Second Chance bonus may entice more gamblers to join the hockey fight.
First-goal scorer bets in the NHL can be profitable. The shortest odds for such bets on Tuesday night’s NHL games vary from +900 (risk $100, win $900) to +1600.
Of course, getting it right is easier said than done, and BetMGM’s “insurance policy” may appeal to bettors.
