Betfred’s cutbacks in the United States will continue over the holidays.

The British bookmaker said on its website that it has closed its land-based betting activities at Washington’s Silver Reef Casino Resort, thus ending its presence in the Pacific Northwest.

A message on the casino’s website stated that the sportsbook was temporarily closed on December 16 and that the final bets were placed on December 15. It will reopen in the spring of 2025 under a different brand. On Instagram, Silver Reef stated that the shutdown was due to “unforeseen circumstances.”

Furthermore, Betfred’s website claims that all sports betting activities in Iowa will terminate on December 31. It stopped accepting new users and bets in the Hawkeye State in November, and customers may only withdraw funds until New Year’s Eve.

This appears to imply that Betfred will launch in only two markets in the United States in 2025. It still has a land-based sportsbook in Nevada and provides mobile betting in Pennsylvania.

SBC Americas contacted Betfred to confirm the status and clarify the operator’s plans for the two remaining states, but has yet to receive a response as of writing.

Betfred US CEO suggested that the scale-back could lead to a full shutdown.

Washington is the latest market where Betfred has closed its doors. It stopped operations in Colorado, Louisiana, Maryland, and Ohio earlier this year, and removed its online sportsbook from Virginia in October and Arizona in November.

That left only Iowa, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Washington with online or retail sportsbooks.

Betfred’s U.S. CEO Kresimir Spajic said in late summer that a complete American exit was potentially “on the table” if the company could not chart a path towards a sustainable business model in the U.S. market.

Betfred is one of many online sportsbooks that have either pulled back or exited the United States due to the problems that come with being a smaller operator in the market.

Betway, SI Sportsbook, and Unibet have all exited the country’s online betting sector, while SuperBook and WynnBet have dropped out of all but Nevada.
