According to a National Police Agency poll, 3.37 million Japanese citizens have gambled at internet casinos, according to The Asahi Shimbun newspaper.
Approximately JPY1.24 trillion (US$8.39 billion) in wagers were made at online gambling sites each year, according to data from the poll, which is reportedly the first of its kind in the nation.
According to the poll results, which were made public on Thursday, 75.2% of players who visited free online casinos went on to play the paid versions and wager real money.
According to the data, 59.6% of survey respondents who played at online casinos admitted to having a gambling addiction.
The Asahi Shimbun claims that it is illegal to wager on online gambling sites, including those that are regulated, from within Japan.
According to a National Police Agency spokesman cited in the article, the poll “highlights the prevalence of illegal gambling” throughout the nation, describing the situation as “extremely serious.”

Between July 2024 and January of this year, almost 27,000 Japanese citizens between the ages of 15 and 79 were interviewed for the poll.
According to the data, 500 of the 7,000 respondents who participated in the poll were identified as having prior experience placing bets at online casinos.
According to the findings, 3.5% of all respondents had previously visited or were currently utilizing online gambling sites. The percentage corresponds to an estimated 3.37 million persons who have used online casinos, based on the country’s total population.
According to the survey, 43.5% of participants were not aware that gambling online is prohibited in Japan.
A first round of applications for up to three licenses for integrated resorts (IR) with casinos was conducted by the nation, which has legalized casino gaming.
The sole offer that won in the first round was for the MGM Osaka casino complex. The project is situated on Yumeshima, an artificial island in Osaka Bay, and is scheduled to open in 2030.
