With the Worlds 2024 Swiss stage completed, let us look at the viewership stats ahead of the Knockout stage.
Worlds 2024 Swiss Stage viewership sets a new series record
Following a great play-in stage, the group stage of the 2024 World Championship has broken a few further viewing records, indicating healthy development for LoL Esports.
According to data provider Esports Charts, average Worlds viewing increased by 36% over the previous year, with one Swiss stage series hitting the 3 million audience threshold during the series between T1 and G2 Esports, one of the best West versus East rivalry.
The average audience was more over 1.5 million, with all indicators showing growth, including the number of distinct broadcast channels and online viewing in many languages.
New records across the board.
There were some key lessons from the Swiss stage. The first is that YouTube overtook Twitch in peak viewing, and Vietnamese viewers took over Korean and English-language broadcasts for the first time, demonstrating that Vietnamese fans are carefully following the global championship.
The overall number of people peaked at 803,300, a few thousand less than the high recorded during Worlds 2023.
The phenomena was most likely impacted by GAM Esports’ inclusion in the top 16, but Vietnamese fans are expected to continue to watch games as the best of the best compete in the Knockout round.
Other than GAM, six other teams have set match viewing records: PaiN Gaming, PSG Talon, Team Liquid, FlyQuest, Hanwha Life Esports, and Top Esports.
This is owing to the cross-regional matchups that have taken place throughout the new Swiss stage system, which was implemented last year.
Co-streamers are growing.
Since co-streamers were enabled for international matches, we’ve seen how fans frequently rely on them for interaction and a more immersive online experience.
This season, the top English-speaking streamer Marc “Caedrel” Lamont smashed his own record, reaching over 300,000 views in the deciding series between G2 and BLG.
Niklot “Tolkin” Stüber also reached a new personal best of 72,800 concurrent viewers, while Brazilian streamer Baiano established a new YouTube record and outperformed the official CBLOL channel.
With fan favorite teams like T1, Gen.G, and BLG, we might see new records smashed in the next two weeks. Knockout Stage bouts begin today in Paris, with the finals taking place on November 2 at the O2 Arena in London.
